The International Connections Committee (ICC) of the Appalachian Studies Association (ASA) organises a free Zoom conversation about the impacts of the war in Ukraine on Carpathian Mountain communities on 14 May 2022, 12:00-1:30 EDT (registration required).
This conversation builds on years of scholarly and personal connections between Appalachian and Carpathian Mountain communities, many of which have been fostered through ASA. Beginning in the early 2000s, ASA welcomed Ukrainian–and then Romanian–scholars, students, and community members to Appalachia to present their research on the Carpathian Mountains at our annual Appalachian studies conferences. In 2013 and 2017, scholars, students, and community members from Appalachia traveled to Ukraine to participate in Carpathian/Appalachian conferences and visit Carpathian Mountain communities. In 2015 and 2019, those Appalachian constituencies traveled to Romania to do the same. A fifth Appalachian/Carpathian conference is planned for October 2-7, 2022 in Brașov and Măgura, Romania.
During the Zoom conversation, the ways that the Russian war in Ukraine continues to impact Carpathian Mountain communities and mountain people, both within and outside Ukraine will be considered.
This free Zoom conversation will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 12:00-1:30 PM, Eastern Daylight Time (US and Canada).
